Members and friends of Prospect Street UMC,

This week we will return to our normal Sunday schedule:
8:30 Praise Service
9:30 Sunday School
10:30 Traditional Service

If you are unable to return to these in-person services at this time, please know we will continue to broadcast the services on the radio as we have been doing during our drive-in services.  We will also continue to post videos of the services on YouTube.

We thank everyone for their patience and flexibility through this season and ask everyone to continue supporting the church through their prayers.  May we be guided by the Holy Spirit to be united to love God, growing in our commitment to Christ, serving others and welcoming all people.

In Christ’s Love,

Afterthoughts 5/19/2021

Steadfast

Psalm 33:22
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

Steadfast love is a very common phrase in the Scriptures.  In the New Revised Standard Version, for instance, it occurs 120 times in the Psalms alone.  It comes from the Hebrew word chesed, which we translate a variety of ways in English: lovingkindness, mercy, goodness, kindness, and of course, steadfast love.  A word that needs that many other words to describe its meaning is like an overstuffed suitcase, full of life.

To say God’s love is steadfast – what does that mean?  One of the things that comes to mind for me, though, is the sheer patience of God’s love.  It can stretch and hold you when you are at great lengths from God, yet it never loses its tension, its pull, drawing you back to God’s heart.  It is a love that give you this dose of patience where you have no patience for others and are especially impatient with yourself.  It is a love that never gives up on you, even when you have given up on yourself.

God’s steadfast love is constantly, consistently, and persistently beckoning you to “come home,” to return to God’s Presence, the “shadow of his wings.”  You are invited into this shelter of belonging where you no longer have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders.  It is amazing to cross that threshold, with the awareness that you are now in God’s Presence, and to feel that burden lift, to feel a lightness that surrounds you and flows through you.  You can now stand a little taller, though you no longer need to.

May you follow the still, small Voice calling you home.
May you drop your pretensions and simply be who you really are.
May you let go of the burdens you feel you must hold onto for the world to avoid falling apart.
May you let yourself fall apart in a shadow of healing and understanding.
And may you let this God who calls you home, make His home in you,
inviting you into the communion of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Amen.
